Law School Rankings by Outcomes (ABA data)
Our own year-by-year ranks of ABA-approved law schools, one measure at a time, computed from the figures schools must disclose under ABA Standard 509. Not the U.S. News ranking.

At a glance
- Eight measures, each ranked separately in each year: median LSAT, median undergraduate GPA, acceptance rate, two jobs measures, first-time bar passage (raw and against the state average) and two-year ultimate bar passage. No overall score.
- Newest years: the fall 2025 entering class for admissions, the class of 2025 for jobs, 2025 graduates for first-time bar passage and the class of 2023 for ultimate bar passage.
- History: admissions from fall 2011, jobs from the class of 2012, first-time bar passage from 2016 graduates and ultimate bar passage from the class of 2015. The chart opens on 2015-2025.
- Schools with fewer than 25 entrants, graduates or bar takers behind a figure are shown but not ranked. In the class of 2025 jobs table, 194 schools are ranked and 1 is not.
- Ranks stretch small differences: for the class of 2025, the schools ranked 40 and 60 on jobs were 2.1 percentage points apart (90.1% and 88.0%).

Each figure links to the school's own ABA report. "Change" counts places moved since the year before, for schools ranked in both years. The 5-year average is the mean of the school's ranks in the 5 years ending with the year shown, counting only years it was ranked, and is shown when it was ranked in at least 3 of them. Biggest movers: Jobs, class of 2025 vs. 2024
The largest rises and falls in rank since the year before, among schools ranked in both years, worked out from the table above. A big move can come from a small change in the figure, especially in the crowded middle of the table.

How the ranks work
- The figures are the ones each law school reported to the American Bar Association and the ABA publishes: entering-class admissions in the Standard 509 report, employment about ten months after graduation in the Employment Summary, and bar results in the Bar Passage (now Bar Admission) report.
- Each measure is ranked on its own, within one year, across every school that reported it that year. A school ranked 12 of 194 had the 12th best figure among 194 ranked schools. We never combine measures into one score.
- Ties share a rank and the next rank is skipped (1, 2, 2, 4). Figures are compared at the precision shown: whole LSAT points, GPA to two decimals, rates to a tenth of a percentage point.
- A school whose group behind a figure has fewer than 25 people (entrants, graduates or bar takers), or did not report the group's size, is shown in grey as "Not ranked" and left out of the count. One or two people can swing a small school's figure.
- The jobs measures leave out jobs funded by the law school or university. The ABA reported those inside the job categories for some classes and in a separate row for others, so we subtract them where needed; for the class of 2011 they cannot be separated, so the jobs measures start with the class of 2012.
- Closed and merged schools appear in the years they reported. Re-coded schools (Cooley, Atlanta's John Marshall) keep one history, and their older figures link to the reports filed under their old ABA code.
- The chart marks the years when the ABA changed what a figure counts or how it is reported. Compare years across a marker with care.
The eight measures
- Full-time, long-term bar passage required jobs
Graduates employed full-time, long-term in jobs that require bar passage (bar admission from the class of 2024), not counting jobs funded by the law school or university, as a share of all graduates. Measured about ten months after graduation.
Years: Class of 2012 to class of 2025. Ranked first: the highest figure. Group: graduates.
- For the class of 2011 the ABA gives school-funded positions as one total across all job types, so funded bar passage required jobs cannot be separated out. ABA employment compilation, class of 2011
- Employment status is measured about ten months after graduation (March 15, or the next Monday) from the class of 2014; for the classes of 2011 to 2013 it was measured about nine months after graduation. NALP handout on employment reporting (PDF)
- For the classes of 2015 to 2024 the ABA counted jobs funded by the law school or university in their own employment status row, so the bar passage required and J.D. advantage rows leave them out. For the classes of 2012 to 2014 and 2025 those rows include them, and a separate table says how many were school-funded. ABA employment compilation, class of 2015
- From the class of 2024 the ABA calls the category "Bar Admission Required/Anticipated" instead of "Bar Passage Required". It covers jobs that require bar admission or a license to practice, including jobs the employer expects to convert to an attorney role. ABA employment questionnaire instructions
- Full-time, long-term bar passage required or J.D. advantage jobs
As above, adding full-time, long-term J.D. advantage jobs (jobs where the degree is an advantage), again not counting school-funded positions, as a share of all graduates. J.D. advantage jobs are ones where the degree helps but bar admission is not required, so this measure is broader than the jobs measure.
- First-time bar pass rate
The share of first-time takers who passed, across every jurisdiction where the school's graduates sat, as the ABA reports it.
Years: 2016 graduates to 2025 graduates. Ranked first: the highest figure. Group: first-time takers.
- Bar results start with the ABA's separate bar passage reports, first published in 2018 for the graduates of 2016 and 2017. The older bar section of the 509 report (2011-2016) counted exam results by calendar year and is not comparable, so it is left out. ABA Standard 509 questionnaire instructions
- First-time takers for a year are that year's graduates who took a bar exam plus earlier graduates taking their first bar exam. The state average is the pass rate of graduates of all ABA-approved schools in the same jurisdictions, weighted by where the school's graduates sat. ABA bar compilation, 2026 report
- First-time takers and passers are added up from the school's rows for each jurisdiction, the figures the ABA's pass rate is computed from. For about 30 school-years the summary line's totals differ slightly from those rows (most in the 2022 graduating class). ABA bar compilation, 2023 report
- From the 2025 report (graduates of 2024) the ABA calls these Bar Admission reports instead of Bar Passage reports, and stopped counting graduates on alternative licensing pathways in two categories at once. The ABA says the change does not affect the pass rates. An ABA bar report, 2026
- First-time pass rate vs. state average
The school's first-time pass rate minus the weighted average pass rate of graduates of all ABA-approved schools in the same jurisdictions, in percentage points. This compares each school with graduates of all ABA-approved schools who sat in the same places, so a school is not helped or hurt by where its graduates take the exam.
Years: 2016 graduates to 2025 graduates. Ranked first: the highest figure. Group: first-time takers.
- Bar results start with the ABA's separate bar passage reports, first published in 2018 for the graduates of 2016 and 2017. - Two-year ultimate bar pass rate
The share of graduates who sat for a bar exam and passed one within two years of graduation, as the ABA reports it.
Years: Class of 2015 to class of 2023. Ranked first: the highest figure. Group: bar takers.
- The ultimate rate is the share of a class's graduates who sat for a bar exam and passed one within two years of graduation. Graduates licensed through diploma privilege or other alternative pathways are not counted as takers. ABA bar compilation, 2026 report
- Median LSAT
The 50th percentile LSAT score of the entering class (entrants admitted with an LSAT score).
Years: Fall 2011 entering class to fall 2025 entering class. Ranked first: the highest figure. Group: entrants.
- Through 2016 the 509 report counted applicants and entrants for the calendar year. From 2017 it covers an admission year that ends in early October (for 2025, October 6, 2024 to October 5, 2025). ABA Standard 509 questionnaire instructions
- From 2020 schools also report GRE scores, and from 2024 JD-Next scores. The median LSAT covers only entrants admitted with an LSAT score; the median UGPA covers the whole class. ABA Standard 509 questionnaire instructions
- Median undergraduate GPA
The 50th percentile undergraduate GPA of the entering class.
- Acceptance rate
Offers of admission divided by completed applications. Lower ranks first. Acceptance rate is a measure of selectivity, not of quality: a lower rate means the school admitted a smaller share of its applicants.
Years: Fall 2011 entering class to fall 2025 entering class. Ranked first: the lowest figure. Group: entrants.
- Through 2016 the 509 report counted applicants and entrants for the calendar year. From 2017 it covers an admission year that ends in early October (for 2025, October 6, 2024 to October 5, 2025). ABA Standard 509 questionnaire instructions
Why these are not the U.S. News rankings
Publishers such as U.S. News & World Report rank law schools with their own formulas, which combine many measures with weights they choose. Those rankings belong to their publishers, and this page does not show, use or predict them. Our ranks use only the published facts that schools must disclose, one measure at a time, so you can see the figure behind every rank and check it in the school's own report.
What these ranks cannot tell you
- The schools report these figures themselves. The ABA publishes them but notes that it does not take responsibility for errors; check anything important in the school's own report.
- Ranks exaggerate small gaps, and small schools move a lot from year to year. A change of a few places often means a change of a fraction of a percentage point.
- Median LSAT scores cover only entrants admitted with an LSAT score; schools also report GRE scores from 2020 and JD-Next scores from 2024.
- Bar results before the class of 2016 are left out: the older reports counted exams by calendar year and do not compare with the newer ones.
- Nothing here measures cost, debt, salaries, clerkships, teaching, location or fit, and nothing here predicts your chance of admission.
These are Think Clearly Prep's own calculations from numbers law schools report to the American Bar Association. Think Clearly Prep is not affiliated with or endorsed by the ABA, LSAC, U.S. News & World Report or any other publisher of law school rankings.
Questions
Are these the U.S. News law school rankings?
No. These are Think Clearly Prep's own ranks, computed one measure at a time from figures that law schools must disclose to the American Bar Association. We do not show, use or predict the rankings of U.S. News & World Report or any other publisher.
Where do the numbers come from?
From each law school's required disclosures under ABA Standard 509: the Standard 509 Information Report (admissions), the Employment Summary Report and the Bar Passage Report (called the Bar Admission Report from 2025). The American Bar Association publishes them at abarequireddisclosures.org. We downloaded the ABA's compilations on October 26, 2026, and every value on this page links to the school's own report.
How are the schools ranked?
Each measure is ranked on its own, within one year, across every school that reported it that year. Tied schools share a rank and the next rank is skipped (1, 2, 2, 4). Schools with fewer than 25 people in the group behind a figure (entrants, graduates or bar takers) are shown but not ranked. There is no overall score.
What counts as a job here?
Full-time, long-term jobs that require bar passage (called bar admission required from the class of 2024), not counting jobs funded by the law school or university, divided by all graduates of the class. Status is measured about ten months after graduation (about nine months before the class of 2014). A second measure adds full-time, long-term J.D. advantage jobs.
What is the first-time bar passage rate?
The share of a school's first-time bar takers who passed, across every jurisdiction where they sat, as the ABA reports it. A year means the calendar year of graduation; it includes earlier graduates taking their first exam that year. The "vs. state" measure subtracts the average pass rate of graduates of all ABA-approved schools in the same jurisdictions, weighted by where the school's graduates sat.
Why is a lower acceptance rate ranked first?
Because the measure is selectivity: the school admitted a smaller share of its applicants. It says nothing about the quality of teaching or outcomes.
Why do some schools show "Not ranked"?
The school's group behind the figure was smaller than 25, or its size was not reported, so one or two people could swing its number. For example, Jacksonville University reported 13 first-time bar takers among its 2025 graduates. Graduates admitted to the bar without an exam, such as through diploma privilege, are not counted as takers. A school with no figure for a measure shows "Not reported".
Are closed or merged schools included?
Yes, in the years they reported. Schools that merged or split (such as Mitchell Hamline, Rutgers and Penn State) keep their own history, and the search notes what happened to them.
How often is the data updated?
Schools must publish their Standard 509 report by December 15 each year, so admissions figures for the fall 2026 class are due in December 2026. Employment and bar figures follow in the spring. The figures on this page were downloaded on October 26, 2026.
Does this tool send what I type anywhere?
No. The ranks are worked out in your browser from one data file loaded from this site. School names you search for, the measures you pick and the schools you compare are not sent to us or stored.
The LSAT is the part you control
Median LSAT scores sit behind many of these admissions figures. The free diagnostic is original questions in today's format, with every answer choice explained and results by question family.
